Embracing the Mountains: The Inspiring Journey of Kim Havell

In the world of outdoor adventure, few stories resonate as deeply as that of Kim Havell. A mountain and ski guide, writer, photographer, and mother, Kim embodies the spirit of exploration and resilience. Her journey from city life to the peaks of the mountains is a testament to her passion for nature and the lessons learned along the way. Tune in to the Gnar Stool Podcast!

From Concrete to Snow-Capped Peaks

Kim's story begins in urban environments, where she felt a disconnect with her surroundings. Growing up in cities, she sought an escape, which she found in skiing. Her father, an avid skier, introduced her to the sport during family vacations. However, it wasn't until she moved to New York City that she truly discovered her love for skiing. Class trips to small resorts in the Catskills and beyond provided her with a sense of freedom and connection to the mountains that she craved.

As she transitioned from city life to the mountains, Kim began to embrace skiing not just as a hobby but as a way of life. She started ski racing in high school and college, which laid the foundation for her skills. Watching ski films, particularly those by Greg Stumpf, further fueled her passion and inspired her to pursue a career in the mountains.

The Path to Guiding

Kim's journey into the guiding world was anything but traditional. While many aspiring guides follow structured training programs, Kim's path was shaped by her experiences in search and rescue (SAR) in Telluride, where she spent 12 years. This role provided her with invaluable hands-on experience and a strong sense of teamwork and camaraderie.

As she honed her skills, Kim began guiding unofficially at the Telluride Ski Resort, eventually working her way up to guiding VIPs in the backcountry. Her unique background and dedication to learning allowed her to carve out a niche in a male-dominated field, where female representation has historically been low.

Lessons from the Mountains

Kim's experiences in the mountains have taught her invaluable lessons about teamwork, communication, and risk assessment. One of the most pivotal moments in her career came during an expedition to Denali, where she faced a life-threatening avalanche. This experience underscored the importance of vocalizing concerns and trusting one's intuition—a lesson she now emphasizes in her guiding practice.

Her approach to guiding is rooted in creating an open and communicative environment, where clients feel empowered to express their thoughts and feelings. Kim believes that effective communication is essential for safety and success in the backcountry, and she strives to foster a culture where no question is too small.

Balancing Motherhood and Adventure

As a mother, Kim's perspective on risk and adventure has evolved. After having her daughter in her early forties, she found herself more protective and cautious. While she still loves the mountains, her priorities have shifted, and she now seeks to balance her passion for adventure with her responsibilities as a parent.

Kim's journey is a reminder that adventure can take many forms. Whether guiding clients in the backcountry, working with horses, or simply enjoying time with her family, she continues to find joy and fulfillment in the outdoors.

The Future of Kim Havell

Looking ahead, Kim is excited about the possibilities that lie before her. She hopes to return to martial arts, a passion she had in her youth, and continue exploring the mountains in new and meaningful ways. With her wealth of experience and unwavering spirit, Kim Havell is a true inspiration for anyone seeking to embrace the beauty of the outdoors while navigating the complexities of life.

In a world where adventure often feels out of reach, Kim's story serves as a beacon of hope, reminding us all that with determination, communication, and a love for nature, we can forge our own paths and find our place in the mountains.
